The project began its journey in early 2018, obtained Ohio Power Siting Board (OPSB) approval in January 2021, and began construction in December 2022. Madison Fields Solar Project reached commercial operation in January 2024.
Output from the project is enough energy to power the equivalent of approximately 38,000 Ohio homes annually over its 35-40 year lifespan.
A collaboration between Savion and The Ohio State University to explore new ways of integrating agriculture and solar at Madison Fields project was awarded a U.S. Department of Energy Farms grant at the end of 2023.
This research focuses on growing forage crops like hay, alfalfa, and select cover crops between solar panel rows, while also evaluating complementary grazing practices, precision agriculture solutions, and opportunities to enhance soil health and biodiversity.
Today, those efforts extend above and beyond the soil.
A solar beekeeping program has introduced managed hives and pollinators to the site, supported by native prairie plantings and forage crops like clover. These pollinators play a vital role in maintaining a healthy ecosystem and highlight how renewable energy and agriculture can successfully work hand in hand.
