Following years of thoughtful, deliberate planning and hard work by the entire team, Savion celebrated some special milestones in 2024. We begin our review with a summary of Savion’s most standout moments.
Project Achievements
In June, Savion announced the closed agreement to sell the 150-megawatt (MW) Cass County Solar Project to Ameren Missouri. The solar facility, located in Cass County near Beardstown, Illinois, was announced as operational on December 19, 2024. Based on the average annual use of Ameren Missouri customers, a project of this size is expected to produce enough energy to power approximately 27,500 homes annually.
Madison Fields Solar Project (MFSP) in Madison County, Ohio began the start of commercial operation, and in July announced a long-term Power Purchase Agreement with Amazon for offtake of the facility’s full 180 MW capacity generation of solar energy. MFSP was significant as Savion’s first project to be designed, developed, constructed, and owned by the company.
The 1,696-acre solar farm, which includes more than 400,000 bifacial solar panels is jointly owned by Savion and funds managed by InfraRed Capital Partners with Shell serving as the project’s asset manager. Over the next 40 years, MFSP is expected to produce enough energy to power approximately 38,000 Ohio homes annually.
MFSP is also one of the first operating utility-scale solar sites in the U.S. to intentionally integrate forage and row crop production within the array through agrivoltaics. Savion’s wholly owned subsidiary, Between the Rows, is devoted to the innovative concept called agrivoltaics, which prioritizes agriculture with resourceful land stewardship and dual-use land practices. This dedicated effort to Think Like A FarmerTM across all phases of utility-scale projects, including development, construction, operation, and decommissioning, led to a partnership with The Ohio State University’s College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences. This collaboration includes actively testing and growing forage crops, including hay and alfalfa, along with soil health, precision agriculture, and complementary grazing between the rows of solar panels.
The Office of Clean Energy Demonstration (OCED) announced in October that Savion’s Nicholas County Solar Project (NCSP) was awarded a federal grant of $129 million. The solar project plans to convert two former coal mines in West Virginia into utility-scale solar energy generation facilities capable of generating up to 250 MW of clean power. Repurposing these previously disturbed sites reduces development on sensitive lands, produces and delivers clean power to local communities, and contributes to regional economic revitalization. During Phase 1 of the project, NCSP will refine its business plan —including project schedule, budget, and financial model—and plans to progress permitting and interconnection activities.
Organizational Accomplishments
Working closely with various EPC partners and Shell Renewable Asset Management International (SRAMI) on three construction projects and one operational asset, Savion achieved an outstanding Health, Safety, Security, and Environment (HSSE) milestone, delivering 1.1 million person-hours without a single Serious Injury and Fatality (SIF) event. This marked a safety record for the organization, demonstrating the effectiveness of Savion’s HSSE management approach.
Throughout the past year, Savion experts made public appearances in various industry and educational events, speaking to a range of audiences and stakeholders about utility-scale solar energy and battery storage on multiple topics.
In staffing news, we are proud to celebrate the 10 summer interns that worked across the organization and welcomed two interns from 2023 who were hired as full-time employees.
Pitching In and Giving Back
We had a year full of opportunities and events where Savion staff was able to put in time and resources to organizations important to us:
Harvesters Food Drive – In September, Savion hosted a food drive for Harvesters Kansas City, successfully donating 516 pounds of food, which is the equivalent of approximately 430 meals.
Pride Haven: During Pride Month 2024, Savion organized a donation drive for Pride Haven, a Drop-In Day Shelter and Program supporting transition-aged youth facing homelessness. By the end of the drive, Savion delivered over 200 of the most-needed items to the program center.
Lead to Read: Savion encourages employees to volunteer weekly at local schools with Lead to Read KC, helping children improve their reading skills. Additionally, we collected books over the summer and donated a full plastic tote of books to the schools we support.
Trolley Run: Savion has been a long-time participant and/or sponsor of the Trolley Run, and 2024 was no exception. This year, over a dozen employees participated in person, with more joining virtually. Savion covers the registration fees, and all proceeds benefit the Children’s Center for the Visually Impaired.
Volleyball Tournament: Savion proudly sponsored KVC/Brown and Brown’s Annual Sand Volleyball charity tournament and fielded a team to participate.
Day of Caring: In total, Savion supported 14 charities across 11 cities with over 75 volunteers. In Kansas City alone, more than 40 employees volunteered at four different charities: Avenue of Life, Children’s Mercy, Scraps KC, and Manheim Gardens. Additionally, over 30 remote employees volunteered at various charity locations in their cities. There were volunteers in Austin, TX at Pets Alive; Denver, CO at Rescue Mission; Houston, TX at Food Fair Helpers; Detroit, MI at The Arboretum; and New York, NY at The Red Door Place.
Staying true to our strong Savion tradition, as part of our year-end charitable plan, this year, in lieu of holiday customer appreciation gifts, Savion donated to:
- After the Harvest – to support local efforts to keep food out of landfills and provide rescued fruits and vegetables directly to agencies feeding hungry people.
Looking ahead, the coming year will bring new and exciting opportunities for our organization and the renewable energy industry. All of us at Savion wish all of you a happy, healthy, and bright 2025!
