Position Details
Savion is seeking a dynamic cross-functional energy storage optimization lead – who’s primary responsibility will be optimizing energy storage configurations and dispatch profiles in support of customer proposals, interconnection/development decisions, and M&A efforts. This role, reporting to Savion’s Head of Energy Storage, will be responsible for managing 3rd party energy storage techno-economic modeling (and developing internal models over time); providing recommendations for energy storage sizing, dispatch, and strategy; and communicating those results effectively in both written and verbal formats to multiple internal groups, including written proposal sections in customer RFP responses.
In addition, this position will provide forecasted energy storage revenues (based on optimized dispatch) utilizing capacity, energy and ancillary services price forecasts provided by the structured markets team as inputs.
The successful candidate should have experience modeling energy storage, evaluating RFPs and successful response strategies, and deep knowledge of all the critical levers impacting energy storage sizing and revenues. This cross-functional position requires technical knowledge of energy storage, basic financial modeling skills, and knowledge of storage dispatch, interconnection, and market rules. Knowledge of AI based dispatch platforms/predictive analytics is a plus. This critical storage role will interface with origination, engineering, finance, market analysis, structured markets, siting, transmission, development, and other teams within Savion.
Core Responsibilities
- Energy Storage Optimization – Manage external/ internal optimization of storage in support of RFP responses, interconnection/development decisions, and M&A efforts
- Evaluate and optimize economic use-cases for proposed projects
- Provide forecasted energy storage revenues (based on optimized dispatch) utilizing market price forecasts provided by other team members as inputs
- Consider capacity, energy, ancillary services and any other revenue streams available to maximize project economics
- Proactively obtain all inputs needed to model storage for a given project from both internal and/or external sources
- Model physical and financial impacts of cycle life, calendar life and RTE degradation (as provided by EPC team)
- Optimize systems to maintain useable capacity and performance
- Optimize investment tax credit benefits
- Provide Storage RFP bid configuration and dispatch recommendations (sizing, use case, cycling, augmentation plan)
- Co-optimize solar and storage as required
- Coordinate/track storage bidding efforts with Origination/Finance/EPC including financial model input management.
- Provide Storage Proposal write-up support
- Support storage siting and market analysis through storage revenue forecasting
- Manage team members as they are added to the Optimization team
- Ad Hoc storage research/analysis as required to inform storage modeling efforts including storage market participation and interconnection rules – in coordination with other teams
Preferred Qualifications
- 4-year college degree required, advanced and/or technical degree preferred
- Energy storage modeling experience required
- Basic financial modeling experience required
- 3+ years experience in the renewable energy / energy storage industry preferred
- Knowledge of technical performance characteristics of energy storage included degradation, cycling, state of charge, aux loads, and round-trip efficiency required
- Knowledge of energy storage policies impacting project economics including investment tax credits required
- Knowledge of ISO/RTO dispatch rules for energy storage required
- Must have excellent communication skills and work effectively in a team-based environment
- Must be a self-starter that will proactively seek information and tools to perform the responsibilities of the position
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office – Excel, Word, Power-Point, etc. required
- Programming experience in R or Python and SQL a plus
- AI dispatch / real time predictive analytics experience a plus
- Remote work acceptable (with travel up to 10% of the time to main office)
